Special Finishing Details

SLOT SEAM

slot seamThe slot seam is probably most effective when used on a heavier fabric, such as coarse wool. The design of the garment should be relatively basic. To create a slot Seam, follow these instructions:

  • Sew a palin seam to the point where the slot is to begin, and backstitch each end of where the opening is to be.
  • Machine baste the section of the slot that is to be opened.
  • Press seam allowance open.
  • Lay a piece of fabric 1 inch longer and 1 1/2 inch wider than the slot over the seam allowance on the reverse side of the fabric, centering the fabric piece over the slot.
  • Topstitch on each side of the seam line the desired length of the slot. If the slot is curved, use bias tape for the slot underlay.
  • Remove machine basting.
