The slot seam is probably most effective when used on a heavier fabric, such as coarse wool. The design of the garment should be relatively basic. To create a slot Seam, follow these instructions:
Sew a palin seam to the point where the slot is to begin, and backstitch each end of where the opening is to be.
Machine baste the section of the slot that is to be opened.
Press seam allowance open.
Lay a piece of fabric 1 inch longer and 1 1/2 inch wider than the slot over the seam allowance on the reverse side of the fabric, centering the fabric piece over the slot.
Topstitch on each side of the seam line the desired length of the slot. If the slot is curved, use bias tape for the slot underlay.
Remove machine basting.
