Instructions

Shirt

  1. Cut out neck ruffle pattern from felt.  (see below)
  2. Glue 2 rows of lace on ruffle as marked on pattern. Apply seam sealant to cut edges of lace.
  3. Add a thick layer of glue along top edge of top row of lace and fold edge of felt over into glue. It may be necessary to hold felt edge in place with clothes pins or weights until the glue starts to set.
  4. Apply 2" hook piece to back of neck ruffle at top center edge and 1" pieces of hook at each corner. Attach corresponding loop pieces to hook pieces. Lay shirt flat and center neck ruffle at bottom edge of neck band. Press firmly to secure loop pieces to shirt.
  5. Measure lower edge of sleeve, just above the cuff. (You may need to stretch the cuff to take this measurement.) Cut 2 pieces of lace to this measurement and apply seam sealant to each end. Cut 8 - 1/4" pieces of VELCRO® Brand Sticky Back for Fabrics. For each sleeve, apply 4 hook pieces to top inside edge of lace; one on each end and remainder spaced evenly. Attach corresponding loop pieces to hook pieces. Starting at sleeve seam, stretch cuff and position loop pieces on sleeve, just above the cuff. Press firmly to secure.

Vest

  1. Cut off bottom band, neck band, and sleeves from sweatshirt and discard. Cut sweatshirt front in half, down the center. On each side, mark front 5" down from neck edge. Draw a line from mark to shoulder seam at neck edge. Cut these pieces away.
  2. Turn all raw edges under about 1/2" and secure with fabric glue. Start with bottom, v-neck, front sides, and then sleeves.
  3. For boys, position the button placement chart on the left side. For girls, position it on the right side. Mark button positions. Cut jewelry chain to 2 1/4" lengths. Sew chains ends and buttons at each button position. (Give end chain loops an extra squeeze to keep the thread from slipping through the break in the loop.)
  4. Apply two 6" loop pieces to wrong side of vest under the buttons and along edge. Attach hook pieces to loop pieces. Overlap vest fronts about 3" and press firmly to secure pieces to vest.

Belt

  1. Measure child's waist and add 15".
  2. From vinyl, cut 2 1/2" wide strip by measurement in step 1.
  3. Mark in about 11" from one end (left for boys and right for girls), fold belt into a miter and glue down following craft foam glue instructions.
  4. To fold mitered corner on belt end - Lay strip flat, right side up. At mark, fold end up so end is at a 90° degree angle above the strip, wrong side up. At top edge of belt, fold end straight back down over miter fold. Glue all surfaces to secure. Cut belt end at 45°.
  5. Cut out buckle from craft foam and glue about 5" in from mitered end. Test fit belt to make sure there is at least a 3" overlap. Trim if necessary.
  6. Apply two 3" loop pieces of VELCRO® Brand Sticky Back for Fabrics behind back of mitered strap. Apply corresponding hook strips to front of other end of belt. Wrap around waist over vest and attach VELCRO® strips together to secure.

Hat

  1. Remove any ribbon or decorations from hat.
  2. On front of hat, fold brim up to meet hat crown. Mark meeting spot on crown and brim with pins. Apply loop piece to brim at pin and hook piece to crown at pin. Attach VELCRO® pieces together to hold front of hat up.
  3. On rest of hat, fold up each side of the brim to meet crown, so center back of brim is at a point. Mark meeting spots with pins. Apply loop pieces to brim and hook pieces to crown. Attach VELCRO® pieces together to hold sides up.
  4. If desired, attach skull and cross bones foam sticker to inside of front brim.

Complete costume with plastic sword, sweat pants or pajama bottoms (cutting ragged edges on pant bottoms) and shirt or sweatshirt.  Add purchased eye patch.
