Consumer Guide | Mudpie Fashion Forecast Spring/Summer 2012
For the Spring/Summer 12 season, Mpdclick presents three trends. In ‘Water Footprint’, we consider the potential of water as a key source of energy for the future, along with the development of transport systems and the preservation of coastlines around the world. Inspired by the mesmerizing beauty of aquatic worlds, Water Footprint examines the delicate ecosystems beneath the ocean, the value of hydro-energy and the benefits of a coastal existence. As awareness for environmental issues become ingrained in the global mindset, endless initiatives and projects are being conceived that utilise this incredible force of nature. The staggering fact that two thirds of the earth’s surface is covered by the constantly moving oceans seems to make it an obvious supply of renewable energy, yet it is a relatively untapped resource. The first phase of the trend, ‘Fathom’, dives into the enigma of our oceans where untold mysteries and opportunities lie awaiting to be discovered. It’s said we know more about outer space than life in our own seas; a statement being challenged by a variety of inventive projects. This idea of an underwater Garden of Eden manifests in a compelling vision: the vibrancy of tropical creatures, shimming undulations of jellyfish and the fluidity of the ocean inspire a sensual flair where translucent fabrics emphasize movement and graphics seem to evolve organically. Phase 2, ‘Hydrocity’, moves inland to consider changing patterns of urbanization and a re-evaluation of the benefits of water transport. Visually, these studies translate into an urban look, inspired by cartography with contoured graphics, grid-like printed textiles and precise, paneled garments. Finally, phase 3 of the trend, ‘Offshore’, is embodied by a fresh take on high summer surf culture. Protection of global coastlines and developments in tidal and wind power shows this as an area worthy of attention. Aesthetic direction is taken from the decorative batiks of Indonesia, combined with an intensely tropical colour palette and the bounty of a coastal habitat. While these influences provide a wealth of visual stimulus, they also credit a growing trend for product sustainability and corporate responsibility. As the savvy consumer demands to know the origins of their purchases, the impact of production and transportation become key considerations for all retailers. |
